LEE MATTINSON

West-Cumbrian Lee is a playwright and screenwriter. His most recent play Steel (Theatre by the Lake and UK Tour, 2025) won a UK Theatre Award for Excellence in Touring and was published by Nick Hern Books. His short film Fist (BFI Network / Elevator, 2023) won a Royal Television Society Award for Best Dramatic Performance and screened on the closing night of New York’s SOHO International Film Festival 2024.

Lee’s previous stage credits include: Crocodiles (Winner: Hodgkiss Award 2013, Royal Exchange, 2014), Snap (5x5, Young Vic, 2013), Gary Lineker is Gay (Come to Where I’m From, Paines Plough, 2012), ChaletLines (Bush Theatre, 2012), No Wire Hangers (Soho Theatre, 2011), Jonathan Likes This (Live Theatre, 2011) and Me and Cilla (Live Theatre, 2008).

 He was previously one half of Encounter whose shows I Heart Catherine Pistachio (100° Festival Berlin / Soho Theatre / The Yard and UK Tour, 2016), Choir (Traverse Theatre / Northern Stage and UK Tour, 2014) and The Kids Are Alright (Fuel, 2020) played to critical acclaim.

Lee’s radio credits include: 2 Clowns, 1 Trumpet (I Told You I Was Ill, Contains Strong Language, BBC Radio 3, 2018), Tongue (Sonnets in the City, BBC Radio 3, 2016), Magpie (Afternoon Drama, BBC Radio 4, 2014), Glow in the Dark (Free Thinking Festival, BBC Radio 3, 2012), Me and Cilla (The Wire, BBC Radio 3, 2009).

He has previously adapted The Season Ticket by Jonathan Tulloch (Pilot Theatre / Northern Stage, 2016) and is currently working on an adaptation of Billy Liar by Keith Waterhouse. His feature Madly, originally commissioned for Channel 4’s Coming Up series, was developed through Film London’s Microwave programme where he received mentorship from Lynne Ramsay and John Yorke and the film reached the final round of consideration.
